Heal Their Land
It seems that our land is in need of healing- big time. Our people are not seeking God and praying, at least it seems. There certainly is not a lot of humbling going on. Instead it is about pride, arrogant pride. Now people are not seeking God’s face, but their own self-aggrandizement. Every one wants what they want, now. This is a recipe for disaster. God has made that clear in Scripture of those who do not seek His face. They end up on the losing end of their fights with whatever. The below verse was talking about the Israelites, the chosen people. They were rebellious and seeking after their own ways. In Amos we read of God’s response to this behavior in the 700 BCE Old Testament times, “The Lord roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds dry up, and the top of Carmel withers” (Amos 1:2). God Himself spoke to him.
At the time of Solomon, David’s son, who would build the Temple, in 2 Chronicles 7:14 God said, “If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, then I will hear from heaven and heal their land.”
Interestingly on October 4th, 1997 I attended the largest gathering in the Capitol in the nation’s history, called Stand in the Gap, a Sacred Assembly of Men. We had chartered a plane to bring 100 men from our church to join 1.3 million others to pray for our nation that we would return to the Lord. The event was sponsored by Promise Keepers, the largest Christian men’s movement in history. Its theme verse was the one above. We prayed, talked and met with congressional leadership, seeking revival in our country. It has not come and today, the angst and rancor has risen to a fever pitch over almost opposite political views. Historians have said that no civilization has lasted more than 250 years without self-destruction, unless turning to the Lord. The book, Lessons of History, by Will Durant has much prophetic allusion.
“The fear of capitalism has compelled socialism to widen freedom, and the fear of socialism has compelled capitalism to increase equality. East is West and West is East, and soon the twain will meet.”
Our last election seems to have polarized the country certainly more than any time in my 70 years. One party is pointing toward socialism and big government with minimal individual responsibility, and without God in the solution. The other is looking at smaller government, individual responsibility and God at the head. This has nothing to do with the separation of God and State. It is living by godly principles, not mans’. The income producing population is shrinking quite rapidly and one party wants to tax them so others can live off them. This is the insane definition of killing the golden goose.
I don’t think I have ever seen such a clear difference of vision. God said that without His vision, the people perish. Today, one speaks to persecution of the other until big government wins and the people lose. It does not seem that even murdering of the other has much effect on changing opinion. They are bent on destroying the current president and therefore the country. When the recent President and former candidate join forces to block and stop all actions of the new president, I hear revolution not democracy in the air. Bastille Day and the 1848 French Revolution anniversary is only three weeks away. It was the working class versus the Bourgeoisie. Fascinatingly, in our last election the labor class won, a different one than historically. They were looking for a change from the rich socialists running the country, so all but 17 counties voted for the current President. It is the working class that wants change and they are getting it unless the fractious government keeps trying to destroy the election results. So far, the left is not accepting the people’s verdict. I get it that the popular vote went to Clinton in the large cities where the 17 counties are. They does not represent the country or the majority view at all.
So enough ranting, back to Scripture and the healing of America that comes when we seek God with humility. You see we need to be on God’s side, not vice versa. Amos was calling for piety and righteousness as the way to social justice, not anarchy. God will judge the unfaithful, disobedient and covenant breaking people. You see we are still a country founded upon Judeo-Christian principles, so these commands to change still should hold sway. We are on the eve of our nation’s Independence Day, a time to remember and reestablish the foundations of freedom “In God We Trust.” Let’s change before it is too late.
