God is in Control

Douglas Frank Photo
Have you ever wondered if God is in control? Scripture certainly is clear that God is sovereign, good, all-powerful, all-knowing, unchanging, always present, holy, eternal  and yet personal amongst many traits. He therefore has control over all things including evil.  Even though illnesses and losses of many kinds may happen, He promises to "Never leave us or foresake us. So we can say with confidence, '"The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?'" (Hebrews 13:5-6). This should give us confidence if we know Him, even though our world seems to be out of control at times and our faith might be shaken.

I certainly have experienced many troubles that God promised would happen. One scary trial occured a couple of years ago when our personal computer was hacked by a fraudulent software support company. Perhaps that has happened to you. They came in slowly and even helped us with software issues. They had been recommended by a major “big box” computer store, but they were stealthy. Well today I can still recall feeling violated. Fear and overwhelm described us over that weekend as we struggled to cancel accounts and contact vendors, starting our lives over again. We felt out of control.

Most of the Bible where “control” is used speaks of evil men having control of people and kingdoms and resources. But God created all and is in all, “One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all(Ephesians 4:6).  Since Genesis and His creation of the heavens and the earth God has been in control. “Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash?” (Job 37:15). Job felt that things were out of control when he lost everything, but God. The author of the universe who made us in His image and likeness spoke to Job out of the storm to tell him who He was. He was and is there, controlling all for His glory and our good for those who love Him.He restored Job double.  It is just very hard to remember that when your world seems to be crashing around you with illness, death or loss of some kind that, "In Him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:17).

There are many stories, particularly in the Old Testament of God intervening in dire circumstances to bring miraculous results. But it does not always happen because the earth is a mess and has been since free will brought sin into the Garden of Eden. The earth is becoming morally more out of control every day in a society that is "practically atheistic" without God. But God in Christ Jesus will make all things right again soon when He returns to rule and reign. For those who know Him there will be eternal salvation and light, “In His presence is fullness of joy, at His right hand pleasures forever more” (Psalm 16:11). However, for those who have not yet received Him as Savior and Lord it will be too late and they will live in darkness, not light in God's presence for eternity.

Back to the computer scam. God sent good people to help right our listing ship.  The loss of control is over  as we praise God and give thanks for His goodness in this now sadly common hack.We really don’t control anything, but God wants us as the Apostle Peter said, to "Cast our anxiety on Him because He cares for us. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To Him be the power for ever and ever. Amen! (1 Peter 5:7-11). God is in control!
