“Every good and
perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17).
God is the One from whom every blessing flows, there is not another
source. That is hard for me at times to get my mind and heart around. Sometimes
I think very humanly, which means worldly. Then I think that I find good
people, but “All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no
one who does good, not even one” (Romans 3:12). Yet in the beginning it
was different.
“So God created
great sea creatures and every
living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their
kind, and every winged bird
according to its kind. And God saw that it
was good” (Genesis
1:21). Yes, after God created He called
it all, including humans in His image, and called it “very good.” And then came “the fall,” into
disobedience and sin, where we have been since the Garden of Eden. Today in ever increasing volume there is a
denial of all things God. There is the expression of good in man and the world.
This contradicts what God has said in the Bible, which is no longer taught or
accepted in public. We do not even swear upon Bibles anymore, lest we would be
intolerant.
But God
created all and it was good, yet we chose our own way. God is still in charge
and “slow
to anger, abounding in love” (Psalm 86:15; John 4:2). God is patient
and kind. He wants us to live quiet and peaceful lives, which we don’t do, but “God
our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the
truth” (2 Timothy 2:4). Peter
described God saying, “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone
to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). That’s the kind of good God we
serve. And for His people, He wants us to “Live such good lives among the pagans that,
though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify
God on the day He visits” (1
Peter 2:12). It is the love of a good God that constrains us to do “good works”
through Christ Jesus our Lord. Now is the time to shine the light about the “Perfect
Gift” in Jesus Christ who came down from heaven to show us the way, the truth
and the Life in Him.
