God's Gracious Creatures: Tales of Wings and Tails
This is the tale of our Sanctuary and its many creatures, of winged and tailed birds and four-legged friends who live in it. Our home and feeding grounds are surrounded intentionally by dense bushes and trees to protect our menagerie that come day and night to feed on seed to the tune of 2,000 pounds a year. Our Sanctuary extends from our secluded lot back over fields, ponds, and forests to the Milwaukee River a half mile down the gravel trail that runs from the still existing original 1872 farmhouse. The land was once hunted by Chippewa and Algonquin Indians of the Potawatomi and Menomonee tribes and first explored by Joliet and Pierre Marquette in 1673. Settlers came from New York and Europe in the 1830s into the dense forestland to establish farms and orchards to homestead. This storybook brings to life 45 chosen characters that we almost daily observe playing and feeding in the Sanctuary throughout every season. Our Sanctuary is a sacred place of refuge from predators like Conner the Coyote and Wisey Owl even in the deep snow and cold winters of the north. In this retreat our congregation of characters raise their young and share in the plenty, unlike humans. They are each described scientifically as well as in character type sketches accompanied by a Bible story that corresponds to their lives. The thread throughout is the grace and faithfulness of our God in creating and watching over His special work. It is written from the standpoint of observer for parents and grandparents to read to their children and grandchildren to share in our rich natural heritage. Enjoy the fun feeding frenzies and the antics of Sanctuary characters with your family.

Great is God’s Faithfulness is a devotional book based on selected Biblical Psalms. It addresses the faithfulness of God through Scripture and my own life experiences in story and other media. The book was generated for the broad audience of those dealing with the challenges of life. It is presented from the author’s Judeo-Christian perspective.
It was designed to be presented for small group ministry or
for individual life journeys. The Psalms were written over several hundred
years to address many of our human emotions. Although the Psalms speak loudly
by themselves, I have added several dimensions to the book to expand the
learning and experience for the reader.
The length is determined by some 40 Psalms together corresponding to the
approximate length of stay at Rogers Memorial Hospital, a psychiatric facility
in Wisconsin. It probably would
not have been written if a Roger's chaplain, where I also served as chaplain, had not urged me during a long
convalescence from hip surgery.
A landscape photograph composed by artist Douglas Frank, my
cousin, accompanies each Psalm. These photographs, which hang is many art
museums, speak to the mystery of God’s creation and are meant to deepen the
experience of reading. Also there is a meditation or reflection accompanying
each Psalm and a relevant quotation and/or prayer to go with it. These are Psalms of the heart, so I
have also included accessible music sites that play to the Psalm and its mood
or melody. This book
is uniquely interactive, asking the reader to join in with questions for meditation
and prayer, for responsive writing or even drawing. The multi-dimensional approach is to help address and plumb the
depths or our various learning styles.
This devotional book is written with an accompanying blog designed for continuing interaction with readers on life’s journey through trials and temptations.

This is The Way, Walk in It, Vol. 2 are available from Amazon
On my blog I have related the story of hearing God audibly speak to me while in a Christian counselor’s office. I was seeking guidance after several stressful years of leading hospital turnarounds as CEO. As I envisioned God in my mind, an audible voice spoke “This is the way, walk in it.” I had no idea at the time that this was an actual Scripture verse from Isaiah 30:21. My counselor had heard the voice but not the words that would come to be the title of my 2-volume book, This is The Way, Walk in it. This command given in a caring voice would also be my calling into ministry. I soon began seminary with the goal of becoming a healthcare chaplain. The book speaks of personal theologies and essays on topics ranging from God’s faithfulness and promises to our fears, failures and God’s wisdom in them. Many chapters include multiple essays and questions for personal reflection and journaling.

Hospital Parables: "Front Office to Bedside" is available from Amazon
This book arises out of my 45-year career working in
hospitals from 1970 through today. The first 35 years I was a healthcare
executive, educator and consultant, including leading several hospital
turnarounds in the upper mid-west. I also served as a consultant to nearly 100
hospitals across the country in administrative, quality and performance issues.
In 2000 after an epiphany experience leading a men’s Bible study, I began
attending seminary with the goal of becoming a healthcare chaplain. Then
began the transition from the executive suite or “front office to bedside”
caring for patients, families and staff spiritual needs. My enlightenment came through the stress of
leading hospitals through the many conflicted relationships working with
government, unions, medical staffs and finance where goals often differed with
various constituents. I was being called to use my gifts in a new and more
fitting role.
From these many opportunities to serve came fascinating
challenges and adventures that portray my roles. The stories include successes
and failures along with a parable or moral lesson. The innocent and guilty characters names are
protected.
Enter into the awesome power of God’s Word and His creation that your walk might be deepened or enhanced. Enjoy the journey.
